There are perhaps a dozen knot configurations still in active use across the Persian and Indian weaving belt. Each one produces a different surface tension, a different play of light along the pile. This carpet uses the asymmetric knot that gives the field its softness without losing definition, the same configuration the great workshop carpets relied on.

The carpet was put up on a vertical loom in northern India. 2 weavers shared the work over roughly 4 months, tying knots by feel against the warp without lifting the cartoon between rows. Around 0.4 million asymmetric knots in total, with wool pile on a cotton foundation. The brown register is built up across multiple dye lots so the eye reads variation rather than a single flat field, and the pile was clipped and washed by hand once the rug came off the loom.

The composition

A composition built around a brown ground that anchors the field with the warmth of walnut. The pattern develops at a measured pace and the colour holds its register across the field. What looks like a single colour at the door resolves into three or four close tones once you stand on the rug, which is the property that separates wool work from printed alternatives.

What you are buying

A democratic entry to hand-knotted wool work. The construction is real, the wool is real, and the rug will outlive most of the furniture it sits beneath. Treat it as a long-term piece rather than as seasonal decor.

The piece in a room

At 4' × 6' (122 × 183 cm) the rug holds an entry vestibule, a small study, the foot of a bed, or a single armchair beside a window. It is the right scale to introduce the brown palette into a room without forcing the rest of the furnishing to follow it. The pattern resolves close in and recedes at distance, which keeps the rug useful in rooms whose proportions are not generous. Holds its own next to large-scale art and works against a single accent piece rather than a busy gallery wall.

Conservation

Rotate end for end every six months so light and footfall age the pile evenly. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth, never rub. A hand wash by a wool-trained cleaner every five to seven years is appropriate for a knotted carpet of this caliber. The rug is built to live for several decades.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.

Have a question about this carpet?

We are happy to answer questions about size, material, weave technique, sample availability, custom orders, lead times, or anything else. Average reply time is under 30 minutes during business hours (10am – 7pm IST).
