The Oushak design has its own quiet authority among the Persian-style traditions. Originally woven in western Anatolia from the fifteenth century onward, Oushaks were prized in Italian Renaissance painting and appear in works by Lotto and Holbein as the floor covering of choice for important sitters. The pattern softens the tighter floral repeats of central Persia into open, loosely drawn floral fields with a subdued palette. The ivory ground is the canonical Oushak background.

Three weavers worked this 8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) loom in India over around five months. The pile is hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation, the construction handmade in the Oushak tradition that prefers a slightly looser knot density to keep the floral drawing soft rather than crisp. After weaving the rug was washed in a lustre bath, sheared by hand to even the pile, and the selvedges hand-finished along the long edges.

The composition

An ivory field carries an open floral repeat in muted rust, soft sage, and pale indigo, with a single restrained border in deeper ivory and rust. The Oushak discipline is restraint; the floral drawing breathes rather than crowding the field. Over the first decade the ivory will warm into bone, the rust will lighten toward a softer terracotta, and the overall palette will gain the patina that makes antique Oushaks valuable on the secondary market.

This is a contemporary weaving in the same tradition, in the same fibre, in the same loose-knot construction. A hand-knotted Oushak appreciates with use; the wool gains lustre with foot traffic and the patina develops over years.

Conservation

Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn for even wear. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Blot spills immediately with a clean white cotton cloth, working from the outside in. Hand-wash by a wool conservator every five to seven years. With this routine the Oushak runs eighty to a hundred years.
