Silk and wool together is the oldest collaboration in the high-end carpet tradition. The wool gives the field its weight, its warmth, its ability to recover from foot traffic, and its quiet matte ground. The silk lifts the highlights, picks up light at a different angle, and gives the pattern its sheen against the steady wool field. The brown ground in this rug is built on that contrast, with silk threads worked through the wool pile so the design catches and releases light as you move past it.
Three weavers shared the loom for close to six months. Each Persian asymmetric knot was tied by hand against the warp and beaten flat with a steel comb. The wool is hand carded and hand spun for body. The silk is mulberry filament, which is the only silk fine enough to work alongside wool without losing its lustre. After weaving, the carpet was sheared by hand to expose the silk highlights against the matte wool ground.
The composition
A warm brown ground worked in classical motifs picked out in silk highlights. The wool reads as a steady field, the silk floats above it. As the angle of light shifts the silk passages move from honey to bronze to amber, while the wool stays anchored in a quiet brown. As the rug ages, the wool will warm slightly toward chestnut and the silk will deepen its lustre under foot traffic. The two fibres age at different rates, which is what gives a silk-and-wool carpet its long visual life.
What you are buying
Silk-and-wool carpets at this scale and with this density of silk highlight list with European dealers between 5 and 12 lac rupees. The construction is more demanding than pure wool because the two fibres take dye differently and require separate baths before they meet on the loom. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating, and the silk content actually deepens its lustre over decades of careful living rather than dulling.
The piece in a room
8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) settles a primary living area or a generous formal dining room. The brown ground reads warm against ivory plaster, against limewash, against pale oak, and against terracotta floors. Pair with brass, with walnut, with raw silk upholstery, with leather, and with traditional or transitional furniture rather than aggressively modern pieces. The silk highlights respond best to lamp light and to morning sun.
Conservation
Rotate a quarter turn each spring and autumn so the silk passages age evenly. Vacuum weekly on suction only, never use a beater bar against silk. Blot any spill with cotton immediately, never rub. Have the rug hand washed by a silk-trained conservator every five to six years. Cared for this way the rug runs sixty to eighty years.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
