Tibetan knotting is a different technique from the Persian and Turkish schools, and the difference shows in the surface. The weaver wraps the wool around a metal rod that runs the width of the loom, ties the knot, and cuts the rod free at the end of the row, which produces a slightly looser pile and a softer surface than the Persian asymmetric knot. The Newcastle line works inside this tradition, combining hand-carded high-altitude wool with mulberry-grade silk in a contemporary palette. The technique has not changed in three hundred years.
One weaver worked the loom for around four months in India. Hand-carded wool laid down knot by knot against cotton warps, with silk highlights pulled through the field where the design called for reflection. The wool was hand-washed before dyeing, which lifts the lanolin out of the fibre and lets the colour penetrate to the core of the yarn rather than sitting on the surface. The piece was finished with a slow shear that exposes the silk highlight above the wool ground.
The composition
The beige reading carries the field with a quiet warmth, with black incident drawn through the design as a graphic accent rather than a competing ground. Silk catches light at certain angles and disappears at others, which is what silk in a carpet is meant to do. Over the years the wool will warm toward bone and the silk will hold its lustre. The Tibetan knot produces a surface that ages into a patina pure-Persian construction takes longer to reach.
What you are buying
Tibetan wool-and-silk carpets in this format with comparable construction trade at international auction in the range of $5,000 to $15,000. This is a contemporary weaving on hand-built looms, in hand-carded wool with silk highlights, by a weaver trained in the Indian floor-loom apprenticeship working in the Tibetan technique. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating. The small format makes the piece the most affordable entry into hand-knotted wool-and-silk that the studio offers.
The piece in a room
3' x 5' (91 x 152 cm) is the working scale for a runner alongside a bed, a layered piece over a larger ground rug in a primary living room, the foot of a sofa, or a meditation corner. The beige and black palette pairs with walnut and oak furniture, with chalk and warm-grey walls, and with brass or polished nickel hardware. The geometry reads at close range and rewards approach.
Conservation
Rotate twice a year so foot traffic ages the surface evenly. Vacuum weekly with suction only, beater bar disengaged. Use a fine-bristle attachment over the silk areas. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth and cool water, never rub. Schedule a hand-wash by a silk-and-wool conservator every four to six years.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
