The Mumtaz collection takes its inspiration from the floral idiom developed under the Mughal court and renders it in the deep, soft palette typical of late-period Agra weavings. The pattern in this rug is built around a centred bouquet motif that opens outward across the field, with the secondary work softer in tone and the border narrow enough to let the central composition breathe.

Two to three weavers shared the loom for around five and a half months on this 7' round (213 x 213 cm) piece. The pile is hand-spun wool, which gives the field its slight tonal drift rather than a uniform colour. Each knot was tied by feel against a vertical beam. The round shape was achieved by tapering the knot count row by row, and the cotton foundation was reinforced at the widest part of the field to hold tension across the curve. The pile was sheared in two passes to relieve the floral motif against the brown ground.

The composition

A light brown field with deeper-toned floral work at the centre and across the field margins. The brown is not flat. Hand-spun wool refuses uniformity, and the field carries warmer and cooler passages that read as a softly drifting ground rather than a printed colour. The floral work picks up the natural variability of the dye and reads as quietly handmade rather than mechanically uniform.
