The carpets that the trade now calls Moroccan were almost unknown outside North Africa until the 1920s, when French colonial collectors began bringing them home. The form entered the modern design canon in earnest after the war, when post-war taste turned away from ornament and toward the kind of pared geometry the Berber tradition had been working in for centuries. Colour holds in the blue register. The drawing is built on contrast that resolves into harmony rather than tension. The dominant colour holds the field, the secondary values trace the figure, and the smallest accents punctuate the corners. Pairs less well with strongly patterned upholstery, where the rug expects to be the dominant graphic element in the room.

Storage between uses should be flat or rolled around a tube, never folded, with a layer of unbleached cotton between the pile and any other surface.
