Beni Ourain refers to a confederation of Berber tribes in the Middle Atlas mountains whose women have woven the same kind of carpet for at least eight centuries. Undyed cream wool, sparse charcoal-line geometry, generous pile, and a deeply personal cartoon developed by each weaver as the rug was being made rather than copied from a paper draft. The tradition entered the European design conversation through Le Corbusier, who used Beni Ourain rugs in his Cite de Refuge in 1933, and it has not left since. Rabat is a contemporary descendant in the Beni Ourain idiom, woven in India to the village vocabulary at a generous scale.
The loom carried four weavers across roughly eight months. Pile is undyed organic wool, hand-spun from village fleece and washed with rainwater rather than caustic soda so the natural lanolin stays in the fibre. Knots are tied long and loose against a vertical beam, then sheared to a high pile that gives the carpet its characteristic plush feel underfoot. The cartoon is sparse: thin charcoal lines crossing the cream ground at irregular intervals, drawn freehand rather than from a fixed cartoon.
The composition
An undyed cream ground that ranges from bone to soft ivory across the field as the natural fleece variation reads through. Thin charcoal lines cross the ground in a loose lattice, the lines hand-drawn so they vary slightly in weight and angle. There is no border, no medallion, no symmetry. The composition reads as a personal mark made with restraint. The cream will warm slowly toward bone over the years and the charcoal will relax into a soft graphite.
What you are buying
Antique Beni Ourain rugs at 12' x 15' (366 x 457 cm) with verifiable mid-twentieth-century Berber attribution and sound condition reach $20,000 to $45,000 in the European and US trade. This is a contemporary weaving in the Beni Ourain idiom, on the same kind of vertical loom, with the same hand-spun undyed wool and the same village cartoon discipline, sold direct from India. The piece appreciates with use as the wool relaxes and the cream warms.
The piece in a room
12' x 15' (366 x 457 cm) is the scale for a generous lounge, a primary bedroom with a king bed and reading chairs, or a large open-plan living space. The cream ground brightens any room and pairs particularly well with raw oak floors, lime-washed walls, leather in saddle and oxblood, blackened steel, and a single major work of contemporary or modernist art. The high pile is forgiving underfoot.
Conservation
Half-turn the carpet twice a year. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged, suction only. Comb the pile occasionally with a soft wool brush to lift the natural lanolin. Blot spills with bottled water and clean cotton. Specialist wool hand wash every five to seven years. The piece runs eighty to a hundred years.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
