Few tribal weave traditions have crossed continents as cleanly as the Beni Ourain. From the Berber villages of the High Atlas the diamond-grid carpet travelled into European modernist interiors in the 1950s, then into American minimalist galleries in the 2010s, and into South Asian weaving studios soon after. The Dara figure in charcoal is the canonical contemporary expression of the Beni Ourain idea; a deep saturated ground broken by an irregular ivory lattice with the doubled-diamond Dara mark sitting at intervals.
Three weavers worked this loom in India over around five months. The pile is hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation, knotted in the deep tradition that gives the Beni Ourain its sculptural quality at the floor. The charcoal was achieved with an iron-mordanted bath that pulls the wool into a deep warm grey. The undyed ivory is New Zealand wool, longer in staple than the local fibre, which is why it sits so cleanly against the dyed ground.
The composition
A charcoal field with an irregular ivory diamond lattice, broken by Dara doubled-diamond figures at intervals. The diamonds are drawn by feel rather than by graph, so each one differs slightly from its neighbours; this is the visual signature of a hand-tied piece in the tribal idiom. The contrast between charcoal and ivory is the rug's principal subject; secondary tonal life comes from the slight abrash of the dyed wool.
What you are buying
Authentic Berber Beni Ourain pieces of this calibre sell at $6,000 to $14,000 at design dealers internationally. The rug in front of you is a contemporary work in the same tradition, on a vertical loom, in hand-spun wool with a long pile. Hand-knotted thick-pile wool appreciates with use as the fibre relaxes underfoot and gains lustre.
The piece in a room
The drawing-room scale Beni Ourain anchors a sitting area with a three-seat sofa or an L-shaped sectional. The charcoal palette pairs with white plaster walls, with raw oak floors, with leather upholstery in cognac or tobacco, with brass and blackened steel lamps. The deep pile rewards bare feet; place the rug where its sensory quality is part of the daily experience of the room.
Conservation
Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Comb the pile occasionally to keep it open. Blot spills immediately with a clean cotton cloth, never rub the long fibres. Hand-wash by a wool conservator every five to seven years. The charcoal holds its tone for decades with this routine; the rug runs eighty years and beyond.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
