Studio carpet design in the second half of the twentieth century pulled from the abstraction of European and American painting and put it back through the loom. This piece is a direct descendant of that mid-century studio conversation.

Two tufters and a finisher worked the piece over 7 weeks, the design transferred to canvas first as a full-scale cartoon and then worked through the surface row by row. Wool was loaded into the tufting gun one colour at a time and pushed through a stretched canvas in long passes that follow the cartoon transferred to the back of the frame. Latex and scrim were applied at the end to lock every loop in place. After the latex set, a finisher worked the surface with long shears for the better part of a week, lifting and trimming the pattern field by hand to give the design the depth the loom does not produce on its own. The relief catches the slow rake of evening light.

The composition

A field of blue broken by lighter and darker registers in the same family. The hand-tufted surface gives the colour a subtle directional quality; viewed from one end of the rug it reads a half tone warmer than from the other end. This is a property of how cut pile reflects light, not a flaw of the dye.

The piece in a room

8' × 10' (244 × 305 cm) is the working scale for a study, a small living room, or a bedroom with the bed positioned across it so the rug shows on three sides. The blue carries through both daylight and lamplight, and the cut-pile surface gives the floor a softness that resolves the cooler register of stone or polished concrete underneath.

Care

Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Every tufted rug loses fibre to a beater bar regardless of price tier; suction is the right tool. Blot spills with white cotton, never rub. Light shedding is normal for the first six weeks of use as loose pile works itself out of the surface; the body of the rug is unaffected. Schedule a professional dry clean every three to four years to lift the embedded grit.
