Modern carpet design as it exists today emerged in the gap left by mid-century European and American abstraction reaching back to the textile traditions of Asia for a vocabulary the painters could not invent on canvas.

This rug was hand-tufted in India over roughly 7 weeks by a team of two tufters and a single finisher. The wool pile was tufted through a cotton ground one colour separation at a time, the gun working at a controlled tension to keep the loop height even across the field. The latex sealing and scrim laminate were applied after the field was complete and the work cured. The final pass was a hand-shear by a single finisher, the pile carved down to relieve the figure above the field by two to three millimetres so the pattern reads at room scale rather than dissolving into noise. The shear marks are visible on close inspection and are the signature of hand finishing.

The composition

A field of beige broken by lighter and darker registers in the same family. The hand-tufted surface gives the colour a subtle directional quality; viewed from one end of the rug it reads a half tone warmer than from the other end. This is a property of how cut pile reflects light, not a flaw of the dye.

The piece in a room

The piece sits at 8' × 10' (244 × 305 cm), sized for the central area of a living room or a guest bedroom. The beige reads quiet under direct daylight and saturates in the evening when the lamps come on. Pairs with walnut and oak as readily as with darker timbers, and with both linen and leather upholstery.

Care

Suction-only vacuuming weekly. Beater bars pull at the tufted base and shorten the working life of the rug. Blot spills immediately with clean cotton, never with paper towel which leaves fibre behind. Expect six weeks of light shedding from new as the loose ends of the cut pile work themselves clear. A professional dry clean every three years keeps the surface from compacting.
