Kazak rugs trace their geometry back to the Caucasus, where Armenian and Azeri weavers developed a vocabulary of bold medallions, hooked diamonds, and stylised tribal totems by the early nineteenth century. The pattern remained largely village work, made on narrow looms by women who carried the designs in memory rather than from cartoons. The Maksat reading of that tradition keeps the angular language of the originals while letting the field breathe, with a deep Caucasian green replacing the rust grounds more common to the type.
Two weavers shared a vertical loom in India for close to four months. The wool was hand-spun from highland sheep, then washed in mountain water before dyeing, which is what gives the green its slightly mottled depth rather than a flat industrial uniformity. Each row of knots was tied against the warp and beaten down with an iron comb, the same tools the Caucasian villages used a century ago. The cotton foundation was sized by hand to keep the rug tight without making it stiff.
The composition
The field is a settled forest green built from indigo and weld over-dyed in two passes. Stepped medallions in cream, terracotta, and oxidised rose run down the centre line. The geometry has the slight wobble that hand-drawn tribal work always carries, the kind of small irregularity that mass-produced rugs cannot fake. Over the years the green will lighten at the highlights and stay dense in the recessed pile, which gives a Kazak its characteristic relief.
What you are buying
Antique Caucasian Kazaks of comparable scale and condition trade at international auction in the range of $4,000 to $9,000 when they surface. This is a new weaving worked in the same village method on a hand-loom, with the same hand-spun wool and the same vegetable palette. A piece of this construction appreciates with use rather than depreciating, and that is a rare thing to put on a floor.
The piece in a room
The rug works against neutral walls and against deep walls equally. The green has enough body to ground a seating arrangement around a low oak coffee table, or to anchor a study with leather-bound shelving. Avoid pairing with strongly patterned upholstery, which fights the medallion field. Brass, walnut, and warm linen are the natural companions.
Conservation
Rotate twice a year so traffic and light age the pile evenly. Vacuum on suction only with the beater bar disengaged. Spills lift with a clean cotton cloth and cool water, never rub. Plan for a hand-wash by a wool-trained conservator at the ten-year mark. With this regimen, a hand-knotted Kazak runs sixty to eighty years through normal household use.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
