The Mahal style emerged from the central Persian weaving belt in the late nineteenth century, marked by an open, all-over floral field and a softer palette than the classical city carpets. What survives is the casual elegance: the design is rigorous but the field reads relaxed.

The fibre is wool, hand-spun, and slightly uneven at the strand, which is what gives the rug its lived patina. Plant dyes throughout: madder for the warm reds, indigo for blues, walnut for browns, oak gall for the dark notes; each colour worked in a separate batch and the strands strung to dry over several days.

The composition

The palette: neutral cream and stone. All-over floral incident at a Mahal scale: small repeats, open ground, soft borders. The pile will compact slightly under traffic in the first season and the colour will pull together; the rug looks more itself with use, not less.

The neutral palette pairs with mid-tone walls, walnut or oak floors, and a relaxed mix of upholstery materials. Direct daylight settles the saturation; lamp-lit evenings deepen the darker passages. The drawing reads cleanly across the room and rewards a closer look on approach. The rug expects to be the work the room is arranged around, not flooring underneath the furniture.

Conservation

Turn the rug end-for-end twice a year so footfall and sunlight do not concentrate on one half of the pile. Suction-only vacuuming, weekly. Blot any spill, do not rub. Engage a wool-trained hand washer every six years for a deep clean. Treated this way, the carpet has a useful life of a century and gathers value as it goes.
