Persian-style floral compositions in deep brown have a specific historical reference. They draw on the late Qajar palette of the nineteenth century, when natural walnut hull and madder were combined to produce the warm earth tones that look black in dim light and read as deep mahogany in afternoon sun. The pattern in this 10 by 14 rug works that lineage at room scale, with vine and palmette repeats arranged around a shaped central field rather than the strict medallion-on-axis composition of court weaving.

This piece was hand-tufted in India over about six weeks by a small team of two tufters and one finisher. Wool yarn was loaded into a hand-held tufting tool and worked through a stretched canvas one tuft at a time, following a cartoon drawn at full scale beneath the work. The back was sealed with natural latex and reinforced with a cotton scrim, then trimmed by hand. The final carving step lifts the floral elements a few millimetres above the field so the design reads as a sculpted relief from across the room.

The composition

The brown ground sits at a deep saturation that shifts with light. Ivory and pale wheat tones outline the floral repeats, with secondary touches of muted coral and faded indigo in the bloom centres. Wool takes brown dyes well and holds the colour without dulling. The borders are layered but restrained, with three guard bands stepping out from the field. The whole composition reads warm at distance and detailed up close.

The piece in a room

10' x 14' (305 x 427 cm) is the working scale for a formal dining room with a long table or a great-room layout with two flanking sofa groups. Pair with walnut floors and brass lamps, with linen upholstery in oat or cream that lets the brown carry the weight, and with traditional or transitional case goods rather than purely modernist furniture.

Vacuum weekly on a low setting with the beater bar disengaged. Brown grounds show dust quickly; alternate vacuuming direction between passes. Blot spills with a clean white cotton cloth; never rub. Professional dry cleaning every three years protects the latex bond and refreshes the wool's natural lustre.
