Tribal Caucasian weaving compresses centuries of nomadic visual language into a small repertoire of medallions, hooked motifs, and stepped diamonds. The Kazak idiom is the most graphic branch of that family, and Indian workshops working from inherited cartoons have maintained the tradition for a hundred and fifty years. The red palette in this rug stays close to the original tribal weight without any of the softening contemporary cartoons sometimes apply.

Two to three weavers shared the upright loom for around four months. Hand-spun wool was dyed in small lots, the red drawn from madder root, the ivory left undyed, and accent colours drawn from indigo and walnut hull. The piece is tied as Persian asymmetric knots on a cotton warp and finished with a hand-shear to a uniform pile depth.

The composition

A red field carrying stepped medallions and hooked tribal motifs in ivory, indigo, and walnut brown. The border runs in concentric guard bands. The geometry is bold and direct, and the negative space between motifs gives the rug its tribal weight. Vegetable dye produces a slight irregularity in saturation across the field, and that irregularity is the proof of natural colour. The red will warm by half a stop over the first decade.

Conservation

Suction vacuum every week. Rotate end to end each spring and autumn. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth pressed against the pile. Avoid bleach. A wool conservator should hand-wash the rug every five years to restore lanolin and remove embedded dust.
