Red was the colour the Caucasus exported. Madder root grown along the lower Caspian gave Kazak weavers a deep brick that no other regional palette could match, and the southern villages built their reputations on rugs whose entire field carried that single saturated ground. A red Kazak was a status object inside the tent, a wedding piece, a dowry weaving. The geometry on top of the field was kept deliberately spare so the colour itself stayed the protagonist.

Three weavers built this rug in India over roughly four and a half months. Hand-spun wool was carded by hand to keep the lanolin in the fibre, then knotted with the Turkish symmetric knot against a cotton warp. The madder bath was repeated three times across two weeks of drying so the red set deep into the staple rather than coating the surface. Indigo, walnut hull, and undyed ivory wool carried the secondary colours.

The composition

A central column of three octagonal medallions in indigo and ivory floats on the madder ground. Latch-hook anchors at each corner and a deep-walnut border with a running leaf motif. The red is not flat. It carries the abrash banding that hand-dyed wool always produces, lighter through the centre, deeper toward the edges, the way a fresco settles unevenly into plaster. Over a decade the field will warm into a softer terracotta as the ivory medallions yellow into bone.

What you are buying

Comparable madder-ground Kazaks from the 1880-1910 period clear $10,000 to $25,000 at specialist Caucasian auctions when the field has not been chemically washed flat. This piece is woven in the same idiom, in the same fibre, to the same density. A red Kazak ages into its colour rather than out of it, and that property does not exist in any printed or factory-finished alternative at any price band.

The piece in a room

An 8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) red Kazak takes a room. It pairs best with brass, dark walnut, leather seating in cognac or oxblood, and walls in lime wash or unbleached linen. Avoid red upholstery against the field; the rug should be the only voice in that part of the spectrum. Direct daylight is welcome and will deepen the red over the first three years rather than fade it.

Conservation

Rotate the piece each season so traffic and sun work the surface evenly. Vacuum weekly on suction only. Blot spills with cotton and cold water. Plan a full hand wash by a wool-trained specialist at year five and again at year ten. With this regimen, a Kazak runs a hundred years.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
