About two and a half million hand-tied knots. Roughly four months of work for three weavers in India. The numbers behind a hand-knotted Caucasian-revival Kazak are unromantic until you stand in front of one and recognise the visual depth that nothing else on a floor can produce. Each knot was tied by feel against a vertical loom, with no cartoon visible and no shortcut available, which is why even two rugs from the same workshop in the same month carry small individual differences.
The wool is hand-spun on a charkha, dyed in copper vats of madder root for the field red, with indigo and walnut hull for the smaller accent colours. The Turkish symmetric knot was tied on a cotton warp at roughly 100 to 130 knots per square inch. The pile was sheared after weaving to about ten millimetres and washed in a mild soap bath to bring up the natural sheen of the wool. Goat-hair selvedges along the long sides give the rug the rigid edge of a true tribal pile.
The composition
A red field carries a column of hooked medallions running along the long axis, alternating between a stepped diamond figure and a smaller eight-pointed star. Filler ornaments in indigo, ivory, and a soft camel scatter the negative space around them. The border is a narrow band of cream and red reciprocal arrowheads framed by indigo guard stripes. Subtle abrash drifts the red between brick and crimson across the surface, the way a properly hand-dyed Kazak should.
What you are buying
Antique red-ground Caucasian Kazaks of comparable scale and quality have cleared the auction block at Christie's, Bonhams, and Skinner in the $8,000 to $20,000 range over the last decade. The supply of nineteenth-century pieces in saleable condition has thinned considerably. This is a current hand-knotted weaving in the same lineage, in vegetable-bath wool on cotton, made in India over four months. The carpet appreciates with careful use rather than depreciating.
The piece in a room
At 8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm), the rug anchors a primary living area or a substantial bedroom. A red Kazak pairs best with pale walls, dark or mid-tone timber floors, and quiet upholstery in linen, canvas, or natural leather. The geometry answers mid-century furniture particularly well, and the rug holds its own against framed graphic art on the walls without competing with it. Brass lighting flatters the red; chrome and steel flatten it.
Conservation
Vacuum weekly on suction-only with the beater bar disengaged. Rotate the rug end to end every six months so traffic and natural light age both ends evenly. Blot spills with white cotton, never rub. Plan a wool-trained hand wash every five to seven years to maintain the dye depth.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
