A red-ground Kazak is one of the most recognisable objects in the Caucasian carpet repertoire, and the design grammar it draws on is older than most of the European furniture it tends to sit beside. Stepped medallions, octagonal hooks, archaic latch motifs, all carried forward from the village weaving of the southern Caucasus through the workshops of nineteenth-century traders. This carpet is a faithful continuation of that grammar, hand-knotted now in India by weavers trained in the symmetric Turkish knot tradition.
The piece was woven by three weavers over roughly five months. Wool was hand-spun from highland fleeces, with the slight thick-and-thin texture that gives Kazak work its character on the floor; mill yarn would flatten the surface and read wrong. Dyes were prepared in copper vessels from madder root for the principal red, indigo for the secondary blues, and pomegranate rind for the small ivory and ochre passages. The carpet sits on a cotton foundation, knotted with the symmetric Turkish technique that the Kazak tradition has used since the village period.
The composition
A saturated red field carries linked stepped medallions in indigo, ivory, and ochre, with a multi-band border in answer. The geometry is confident and angular. Colour does the heavy lifting; the red and indigo refuse to soften toward each other and that refusal is the source of the carpet's force. With time the red will warm slightly toward terracotta and the indigo will deepen, the way every vegetable-dyed Caucasian carpet matures.
What you are buying
Antique Caucasian Kazaks with comparable colour and drawing trade at international auction in the range of $5,000 to $12,000 when they surface. This is a new weaving in the same idiom, on the same kind of loom, in the same hand-spun wool, with the same vegetable dyes. A Kazak of this build appreciates with use rather than depreciating; the symmetric knot is among the most durable structures in the Asian carpet tradition.
The piece in a room
The red-ground palette anchors a study, a library, or a primary living area arranged around a leather sofa or club chairs. The carpet reads particularly well against bookshelves in dark walnut or oak, against limewashed walls, and against unlacquered brass. Avoid pairing it with another strongly patterned floor object in the same line of sight; the Kazak grammar is the one that wants to do the talking.
Conservation
Rotate a half turn every six months so traffic and sun age the wool evenly. Vacuum on suction once a week, beater bar disengaged. Blot any spill with a clean cotton cloth, never rub against the pile. A trained wool conservator should hand-wash the carpet every five years. Cared for this way, the piece outlives its first owners.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
