Madder-root red is the foundation colour of the Caucasian carpet tradition. The pigment comes from the root of the rubia plant, dug up after three years of growth, dried, ground, and steeped in copper vats with an alum mordant. The colour it produces depends on water chemistry, dye-bath temperature, and the wool's own absorbency, which is why no two madder reds across a Kazak's lifetime are ever truly identical. That variability, called abrash by collectors, is structural to a tribal red rather than a defect.
This piece was hand-knotted in India over roughly four months by three weavers. Wool was hand-spun on a charkha, dyed in long immersions in madder, walnut, and indigo, then knotted on a cotton warp with the Turkish symmetric knot at around 100 to 130 KPSI. The pile was sheared to about ten millimetres and washed in a soap bath to release the wool's natural sheen. Goat-hair selvedges along the long sides give the rug the rigid edge that defines the form.
The composition
A red field holds three medallions running along the long axis: a central diamond flanked by two smaller hooked stars. Filler ornaments, small crosses and arrowheads, scatter the negative space. The border is a band of cream and red reciprocal arrowheads framed by narrow indigo guard stripes. The red drifts visibly across the field as the dye lots changed; that drift is what distinguishes a true vegetable-dyed pile from a synthetic copy.
What you are buying
Comparable late nineteenth-century Caucasian Kazaks routinely cross the auction block at Christie's, Sotheby's, and Skinner in the $8,000 to $22,000 band. This piece is a hand-knotted revival in vegetable-bath wool on cotton, made in India in the same tradition, by three pairs of hands across four months. The carpet appreciates with careful use rather than depreciating, which is uncommon for any object placed on a floor at any price.
The piece in a room
The 8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) format settles a primary sitting room or a substantial bedroom. Red Kazaks pair best with white or warm-grey walls, dark stained or oiled timber floors, and quiet upholstery in linen, canvas, or worn leather. The geometry of the design answers mid-century furniture particularly well; both share a vocabulary of clean line and confident colour. Brass lighting flatters the red; chrome flattens it.
Conservation
Vacuum weekly on suction-only with the beater bar lifted off. Rotate the rug end to end every spring and autumn. Spills go straight up with a white cotton cloth pressed down and lifted, never wiped. Have the rug hand-washed by a wool conservator every five to seven years to keep the dye depth.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
