By the 1880s, dealers in Tiflis were buying Kazak carpets faster than the south Caucasus could weave them. The most common ground was madder red, dyed from the root of the rubia plant in copper vats over multiple immersions to build the saturation that synthetic alizarin would later try and fail to copy. Madder is a slow dye; it rewards patience in the bath and punishes shortcuts. A red Kazak built on properly aged madder reads with depth that the fastest commercial cochineal substitute cannot match.
This carpet was hand-knotted in India by three weavers across about four months. Hand-spun wool was prepared in copper vats of madder root, with walnut hull for the cream highlights and indigo for the small black-blue accents. The Turkish symmetric knot was tied on a cotton warp at roughly 100 to 130 KPSI. The pile was sheared and washed in a soap bath to lift the wool's natural lanolin to the surface. The fringes are integral warp ends, knotted by hand in pairs.
The composition
A red ground carries two stepped, hooked medallions arranged along the long axis. Each medallion has a cross at its centre with hooked arms reaching outward, the figure that nineteenth-century Caucasian villages called yastik or sometimes rosette by Western dealers. Filler ornaments scatter the field around them: small diamonds, eight-pointed stars, latch-hook arrows. The border alternates cream and red reciprocal trefoils. Abrash drifts the red between brick and crimson across the field.
What you are buying
Antique red-ground Kazaks of this scale appear at international auction in the $7,000 to $19,000 range, less often than they used to because the supply of nineteenth-century pieces in saleable condition has thinned. A new hand-knotted revival in vegetable-bath wool on cotton, made in India over four months by three weavers, gives access to the same design lineage at a fraction of replacement cost. The carpet appreciates with careful use rather than depreciating.
The piece in a room
8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) anchors a primary living area or a generous bedroom. A red Kazak rewards pale walls, oiled wood floors in oak or walnut, and quiet upholstery in unbleached linen, canvas, or natural leather. Pair with brass lighting and timber furniture rather than chrome and glass; the carpet's vocabulary is craft, not industry. Avoid heavily patterned curtains, which will compete with the medallions.
Conservation
Rotate the rug end to end every six months. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar off, suction only. Blot spills with white cotton pressed straight down. Keep the rug out of long unbroken stretches of direct sun, which will fade even vegetable-dyed wool over years. Schedule a wool-trained hand wash every five to seven years.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
