The composition is built around a single large central medallion. Everything else in the rug works in service of it. That priority is what defines the Karachov sub-group of Caucasian Kazaks, where one bold figure on a saturated red ground does the entire job of the carpet, with no competing focal points and only the simplest filler ornaments around it. Karachov pieces from the late nineteenth century are now among the most actively collected of all Caucasian work.
Three weavers shared the loom in India for around four months. The wool is hand-spun, dyed in vegetable baths of madder root for the red and indigo for the small accents, then knotted on a cotton warp using the Turkish symmetric knot at roughly 100 to 130 KPSI. The pile was sheared down to about ten millimetres after weaving and then washed in a mild soap bath to bring up the natural sheen of the wool. The selvedges are hand-wrapped in goat hair for the rigid edge a tribal Kazak demands.
The composition
A single squared, hooked medallion in cream and indigo dominates the centre, set on a vivid madder red field. Smaller geometric figures, hooked diamonds and cross-and-X motifs, scatter the field as filler. The border is a band of reciprocal trefoils in cream and red, narrower than Persian borders allow. The red ground breathes through subtle abrash, drifting between brick and crimson across the field as the dye lots changed during weaving.
What you are buying
Comparable antique Karachov-style Kazaks have cleared at Christie's, Sotheby's, and Skinner in the $9,000 to $24,000 band. This is a current hand-knotted revival in the same tradition, in vegetable-dyed wool on cotton, made in India over four months by three weavers. The carpet does not depreciate. With careful use the dyes settle, the wool gains lustre, and the value of the piece holds or grows.
The piece in a room
8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) holds the centre of a substantial sitting room or anchors a dining setting under a long table. The bold red field will dominate any space it sits in. Pair with white walls, dark wood floors, and quiet upholstery; let the rug do the visual heavy lifting. The Karachov design works particularly well in rooms with mid-century timber furniture, where the geometry of the chairs and the geometry of the medallion answer each other.
Conservation
Rotate end to end each spring and autumn. Vacuum weekly on suction-only with the beater bar disengaged. Spills go up with a dry cotton cloth pressed straight down. Plan for a professional hand wash by a wool conservator every five to seven years.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
