Roughly two and a half million hand-tied knots stand in the pile of this carpet. Four months of work for three weavers in India, working a cotton loom every day with a curved knife. The economics of a hand-knotted Kazak are unsentimental: the only way to keep the design honest to its nineteenth-century Caucasian source is to weave it the same way the source was woven, by hand, knot by knot, in vegetable-bath wool against a stationary warp.
The wool is hand-spun rather than mill-spun, which means each strand has a slight irregularity in diameter that catches light unevenly across the pile. That uneven sheen is what separates a true revival Kazak from an industrial copy. The dye lots are madder root for the dominant red, walnut hull for the cream undertones, and oak gall as a mordant. The Turkish symmetric knot is used throughout, and the back of the rug shows the single bump per knot that distinguishes the technique from the Persian asymmetric.
The composition
A field of madder red carries two large hooked medallions running along the long axis. Small geometric ornaments scatter through the field around the medallions, the way village weavers fill negative space in the Caucasian tradition. The border is a chain of reciprocal arrowheads in cream and red. Abrash, the natural drift of red across the field where dye lots changed, gives the carpet its sense of depth; the pattern looks subtly different at every visit.
What you are buying
Late nineteenth-century Caucasian Kazaks of comparable scale and condition routinely close at Christie's, Bonhams, and Skinner between $8,000 and $20,000. This is the same construction, the same knot, the same kind of fibre, made now rather than 130 years ago. The carpet does not lose value with use; the patina deepens, the dyes settle, and the rug becomes more itself with each year on the floor.
The piece in a room
At 8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm), the rug carries a primary living area, a dining setting under a six-seat table, or the floor of a generous bedroom. Red on this scale wants pale architectural surroundings: white or off-white plaster, oiled oak or walnut underfoot, and quiet upholstery in linen or canvas. The pairing with mid-century timber and worn leather is particularly successful; the geometry shares a vocabulary.
Conservation
Rotate the rug a half turn twice a year. Vacuum weekly on suction setting only, never with the beater bar engaged. Spills go straight up with a clean white cotton cloth pressed down, lifted, repeated. A wool-trained hand wash every five years will keep the dye depth.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
