The serrated diamond medallion is one of the oldest figures in Caucasian weaving, found on early Karachov and Bordjalou pieces from the southern Caucasus and rewoven continuously through the nineteenth century in Armenian village workshops. Its survival across two hundred years of dealer fashion is a function of how much visual weight the figure carries on a small floor area; a single Kazak diamond can hold a room without any other ornament around it.
This piece was hand-knotted in India by three weavers over roughly four months. Hand-spun wool was prepared in vegetable dye baths of madder root for the red field and a careful ivory left undyed, then washed in spring water before knotting against a cotton warp. The Turkish symmetric knot was used throughout, around 100 to 130 KPSI, which is the density at which Caucasian designs read at their proper scale. The selvedges are wrapped in goat hair for stiffness, the way the village originals are finished.
The composition
A single large central diamond medallion, ivory at its core, framed in red, set on a deeper red field. Smaller hooked figures fill the space around the medallion in a pattern collectors call latch-hooks. The border is built of reciprocal arrowheads in ivory and indigo, narrower than mainland Persian borders, which gives the field room to dominate. The colour drift across the red is deliberate; abrash from natural dye lots is what tells a hand-spun, hand-dyed Kazak from a synthetic copy.
What you are buying
Comparable nineteenth-century Caucasian work has cleared the auction block at Rippon Boswell, Skinner, and Christie's repeatedly in the $7,000 to $18,000 range. This is a new hand-knotted weaving in the same lineage, in vegetable-dyed wool on cotton, made in India by three weavers across four months. The carpet appreciates rather than depreciates with careful use, which is uncommon for any object of this size.
The piece in a room
8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) is the standard scale for a primary sitting room or a study. The red ground works against ivory plaster, lime-washed walls, or warm grey paint, and the rug pairs naturally with worn leather, dark walnut, and brass lighting. Avoid placing under heavily patterned curtains; the Kazak field needs flat textile around it to read.
Conservation
Rotate the rug a half turn twice a year so footfall and natural light age both ends evenly. Vacuum gently on suction only with the beater disengaged. Spills go up with a clean white cotton cloth pressed straight down, never wiped. Schedule a wool-trained hand wash every five to seven years to extend the rug's working life past a century.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
