Kazak rugs were originally woven by the tribes of the south Caucasus mountains, in the band of country running between the Black and Caspian seas. The weavers worked from memory rather than cartoon, which is why every Kazak field carries small irregularities, asymmetries that look like mistakes to the untrained eye and that collectors specifically prize. The bold geometric guls, octagons, and serrated medallions in the canon were first recorded by Western buyers in the 1880s and have been continuously rewoven in revival workshops ever since.

This carpet was hand-knotted in India in the Caucasian revival tradition by three weavers across roughly four months on a cotton foundation. The pile is hand-spun wool, dyed in copper vats with madder root for the field red and walnut hull for the ivory's warm undertone, then aged for ten days before the wool was lowered. Knots are Turkish symmetric, tied across two warps, which is what gives a Kazak its characteristically dense, almost stiff hand and the robust pile that survives generations of foot traffic.

The composition

A central column of three serrated medallions in red on an ivory ground, framed by a wide reciprocal border of stylised arrowheads. The reds vary across the field by a few shades because each batch of madder pulled slightly differently from the dye pot. That abrash is structural to a Kazak; it is what stops the field from going flat. The wool catches light along its spin axis, so the rug appears slightly more luminous when seen along the warp than across it.

What you are buying

Antique 19th-century Caucasian Kazaks of this scale and condition trade at Christie's and Skinner in the $8,000 to $20,000 range when they appear, and the canon has been studied by collectors since the 1903 Vienna exhibition. This is a hand-knotted revival in the same tradition, on a cotton foundation, with vegetable-bath wool. The piece holds value with use and is the rare floor object that does not depreciate.

The piece in a room

An 8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) Kazak settles a primary living area or a dining setting under a six-seater table. The bold red and ivory pattern wants white or warm-grey walls, dark wood floors, and restrained upholstery in cream linen or natural leather. Tribal carpets pair particularly well with mid-century furniture; the geometry is mutually flattering rather than competitive.

Conservation

Rotate the rug end to end each spring and autumn. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar off; the symmetric knot is robust but the surface tufts will pull under aggressive brushing. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth pressing straight down. Have the rug hand-washed by a wool conservator every five to seven years.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
