Navy is the most disciplined colour in the Kazak vocabulary. Where ivory grounds were ceremonial and red grounds were dowry pieces, the indigo-ground Kazak was the working rug of the tribal hall, the colour that absorbed light and gave a tent its visual weight after sundown. Indigo took longer to develop than madder did because the dye sets through oxidation in air rather than heat in water. Each dipping of the wool brought it out of the vat green, then darkened it to navy as it met the sky.

Three weavers worked together on a vertical loom for around four months. Wool was hand-carded, hand-spun, then dipped six times in successive indigo baths over ten days to build the saturation that holds against the ivory and rust counters. The Turkish symmetric knot is tied against a cotton foundation and a stout cotton weft separates each row. The selvedge was bound in two-ply navy wool by the lead weaver in a single sitting.

The composition

Stepped diamond medallions in ivory and rust climb the central axis of the indigo field. The border carries a running latch-hook in walnut and madder, restrained against the depth of the ground. The navy will not sit still; it shifts across the day, reading near-black at low light, and lifting toward a deep cobalt under direct sun. Over years the field develops a faint surface bloom, the silica-like sheen old indigo wool always acquires, and the rust accents soften into amber.

What you are buying

Antique navy Kazaks with comparable saturation and structural condition realise $9,000 to $18,000 at international Caucasian rug auctions, when they appear with intact selvedge and original dye. This piece is woven in the same lineage, on the same loom geometry, to the same density. A vegetable-dyed navy ground appreciates with use rather than depreciating, an inversion of how almost every other object in a household behaves.

The piece in a room

An 8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) navy Kazak grounds a study, a library, or a primary bedroom. It pairs with bookshelves in walnut or oak, with brass and unpolished bronze, with cream and bone upholstery. The colour reads as architecture rather than as decoration. Avoid placing it under blue-toned art; the rug expects to hold the cool register on its own.

Conservation

Rotate the rug each season for even light and footfall. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar off. Blot spills with cool water and cotton, never rubbing. Plan professional wool washing every five to seven years to keep the indigo from accumulating dust through the pile.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
