The Kazak tradition grew out of the south Caucasus in the late nineteenth century, woven by villagers who carried their looms through pastures and made rugs in graphic blocks of colour rather than the dense floral repeats of the Persian court. The geometry was always meant to read at a distance, across a tent or a mountain village home, and the ivory ground in this piece is the rarer of the Kazak palettes. White wool was reserved for ceremonial weavings because it required cleaner fleece and longer wash cycles before it could hold dye-resist clarity.
Three weavers shared the loom in India for around four months. The pile is hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation, knotted with the symmetric Turkish knot the Caucasus has always preferred. Wool was washed in cold river water, sun-dried over three days, and dyed in copper vats with madder root, indigo, and pomegranate rind to hold the rust, blue, and soft amber that read against the ivory field.
The composition
Stepped hexagonal medallions stacked along the central axis, each one outlined in deep indigo against an ivory field that opens the rug rather than crowding it. Latch-hook borders frame the edge in rust and walnut. The ivory will warm into bone over a decade of light, the indigos will deepen, and the abrash bands across the field will become more visible as wool fibres separate by dye lot. Nothing in the palette is static.
What you are buying
Antique Caucasian Kazaks of comparable scale and condition pass through Rippon Boswell and Skinner auctions in the range of $8,000 to $20,000 when the ivory ground survives intact. This is a new weaving in the same village idiom, on the same loom geometry, with the same vegetable-dyed wool. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating, which is the single property that separates a Kazak from any other object you put on a floor.
The piece in a room
An 8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) ivory Kazak holds a tribal voice in a contemporary room without leaning rustic. It sits well against lime-washed walls, against pale oak floors, under a low walnut coffee table, and beside upholstery in undyed linen or oatmeal wool. Brass lamps and unpolished stone surfaces share its register. Avoid placing it under heavily patterned art; the geometry needs the wall to stay quiet.
Conservation
Rotate the rug a half turn each spring and autumn so light and footfall age the surface evenly. Vacuum once a week with the beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth and cool water, never rubbing. A wool-trained conservator should hand-wash the piece every five to seven years to refresh the dye depth.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
