An ivory-ground Kazak is the harder version of the form to weave well. The white field exposes every irregularity in the spinning, every shift in the dye, every slip of the knife. Most village weavers in the nineteenth century reserved the ivory ground for their best work, sold to dealers at a premium and shipped to drawing rooms in Vienna and London where the colour suited the panelled walls. The convention has held in revival production ever since.

This carpet was hand-knotted in India by three weavers across roughly four months. The ivory was left undyed, washed only in spring water and a mild olive-oil soap to keep the natural lanugo of the wool intact. The accent reds came from madder root in copper baths, indigo from fermented woad. Knots are Turkish symmetric on a cotton warp and weft, with goat-hair selvedges hand-wrapped along the long sides. The back shows the dense single bumps of a properly tensioned symmetric weave.

The composition

An open ivory field carries three column-arranged medallions in red, indigo, and a soft camel. Latch-hook ornaments fill the space between the medallions in the Caucasian tradition. The border is a narrow band of reciprocal trefoils in indigo and ivory. Ivory wool yellows slightly with time, which is the quality collectors look for; in five years the field reads bone, in ten it reads warm parchment, all without losing its luminosity.

What you are buying

Antique ivory-ground Kazaks of this scale and quality have crossed the auction block at Sotheby's London and Bonhams in the $10,000 to $25,000 range, with the best examples reaching higher. A new hand-knotted revival in vegetable-dyed wool on a cotton foundation, made in India over four months by three weavers, sits well below replacement cost. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating.

The piece in a room

The 8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) format suits a primary sitting area or a dining room under a six-seater table. An ivory ground reads beautifully against any wall colour, but earns its keep most against deeper paints, charcoal grey, oxblood, or forest green, where the carpet pulls light into the floor. Pair with walnut, brass, and cognac leather for the best contrast.

Conservation

Ivory grounds show soil sooner than red or indigo grounds. Vacuum twice weekly on suction-only, with the beater bar off. Place a runner near doorways so footfall is filtered before reaching the carpet. Have the rug hand-washed by a wool conservator every four to five years rather than the standard five to seven, because the ground colour cannot hide accumulated dust.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
