Light blue on a Caucasian Kazak is a quieter conversation than the dominant red of the canon. Indigo, fermented from the leaves of the woad plant in clay vats, takes weeks to mature and behaves differently every season; weavers in the south Caucasus reserved indigo for accent ornaments rather than ground colour because of how unpredictable the dye could be. A Kazak that runs ivory and light blue across its primary surface is therefore a comparatively unusual reading of the form, more refined than the canonical red.

The carpet was hand-knotted in India over roughly four months by three weavers. Wool was hand-spun on a charkha, with the ivory left undyed and washed only in spring water, and the light blue worked from a single dilute indigo bath. The Turkish symmetric knot was used throughout on a cotton warp and weft. The pile finishes at roughly ten millimetres after shearing. Selvedges are hand-wrapped in goat hair, fringes are integral warp ends knotted in pairs.

The composition

An ivory ground carries three light-blue medallions running along the long axis, each a hooked diamond enclosing a smaller cross figure. Filler ornaments in deeper indigo and a touch of madder pink scatter the field. The border is a band of reciprocal arrowheads in ivory and light blue, framed by two narrow guard stripes. The pale palette gives the geometry a graphic quality unusual in Caucasian work, closer to the cleanness of Anatolian village rugs than to a typical southern Caucasian pile.

What you are buying

Antique ivory and light-blue Caucasian work is rare and commands accordingly. Equivalent nineteenth-century pieces have crossed the block at Sotheby's London and Bonhams in the $10,000 to $25,000 range. This new hand-knotted revival, in vegetable-bath wool on cotton, sits well below replacement cost. The piece holds value with use; the indigo deepens and the ivory warms over years rather than fading.

The piece in a room

8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) anchors a primary living area or a generous primary bedroom. The pale palette pairs well with white-painted plaster, lime-washed walls, oiled oak or rift-cut walnut floors, and natural linen upholstery. Light-blue and ivory together are notably calm; the rug works in a room intended for reading, music, or a quiet evening rather than a high-traffic family living space.

Conservation

An ivory and pale-blue ground shows soil sooner than a red ground. Vacuum twice weekly on suction-only, with the beater bar disengaged. Rotate the rug end to end every six months. Place a discreet runner inside the doorway so footfall is filtered before it reaches the pale field. Schedule a hand wash by a wool conservator every four to five years.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
