Round carpets are an oddity in the Persian tradition. The classical loom is rectangular and the cartoon almost always comes in panels designed to mirror across a long axis. A circular field requires the cartoon to be drawn as a single radial composition with rotational rather than reflective symmetry, and the weaver must work from the centre outward in expanding concentric rings rather than row by horizontal row. The piece in front of you is one such radial silk composition in red, worked over a 6' diameter circle.

Two weavers shared the loom for around six months on this 6' Round (183 cm diameter) silk piece. The cotton warp and weft were set in a circular jig to maintain even tension across the radial form. The pile is reeled mulberry silk dyed in small batches of madder, indigo, and oak gall before knotting. The knot density runs into the fine range, which is the minimum needed to keep the radial geometry from looking stepped at the perimeter.

The composition

A central rosette in ivory and gold opens into a deep madder red field, with the floral and vine work radiating outward in four-fold symmetry. The border, also in red with an ivory and indigo guard band, follows the circumference and frames the radial composition. Silk catches light differently at every angle of viewing, so a round rug rewards walking around it; the colour temperature warms and cools as the perspective shifts.

What you are buying

Round pure silk hand-knotted rugs are uncommon, and at this diameter Western specialists carry tags between 4,500 and 9,000 USD. The form is technically harder to weave than a rectangular field, since the cartoon must be radial and the weaver must hold concentric tension. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating; silk pile gains a soft luster along the lines of foot traffic over years of use.

The piece in a room

6' Round (183 cm) suits a circular foyer, a round breakfast table for four, or the centre of a sitting room with furniture arranged on the perimeter. The deep red palette pairs with walnut, brass, ivory plaster, and warm leather. The radial geometry asks for furniture that respects the centre rather than crossing it, so a coffee table or a round dining table sits naturally above the rosette. Silk holds dye best in filtered light.

Conservation

Rotate the rug ninety degrees every three months; round forms benefit from quarter rotations rather than half rotations. Vacuum gently on suction only with no beater bar and no brush. Blot any moisture immediately with a dry cotton cloth. A silk-trained conservator should hand wash the piece every four to six years. Never machine wash, never steam.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
