Sky blue is rare in the historical Indian silk palette because the natural indigo bath has to be diluted carefully across many short immersions to bring the depth down without losing the clarity, and the silk warp tends to lift the colour cool unless the weaver compensates at the loom. When it works, the result is a register of blue that no other natural fibre can produce. The rug uses that blue against a light brown supporting palette in the medallion format that runs back to Timurid manuscript binding traditions. A central medallion holds the field with palmettes set on its cardinal axes, supporting floral vocabulary fills the surrounding ground, and a measured border carries the design out to the edge.
Two weavers shared this loom across approximately five months. Pure mulberry silk pile on a fine cotton foundation, the Persian asymmetric throw, knot density at the upper Indian end. Multiple short dye baths brought the sky blue forward without dulling its surface lustre, and the light brown was developed in parallel cycles to keep the two colours related. Sky blue takes the field. Light brown carries the medallion structure, the palmettes on the axes, and the border vocabulary.
The composition
The sky blue is the proposition of the rug, and the light brown is the supporting voice that lets the blue read clean. Silk catches blue at angles that wool cannot, and the surface shifts between two values along the warp and weft directions through the day. Light brown is warm enough to keep the rug from feeling cold, and the medallion at the centre sits as the architectural keystone of the composition. The four palmettes on the cardinal axes give the page its rhythm, and the borders carry the same family of forms at smaller scale.
What you are buying
Comparable silk medallion pieces in the blue palette at this size carry international auction estimates of 12,000 to 24,000 dollars when antique stock surfaces. New weavings in the same fibre and density shelve at Western dealers at multiples of the maker's price. Silk on cotton in this format does not lose value across decades. The labour and the dye discipline required to commission a replacement only become harder to source.
The piece in a room
4' x 6' (122 x 183 cm) anchors a primary bedroom, a reading corner, a child's room, or the foot of a queen bed. The palette pairs with cream walls, walnut case furniture, and brass detail. White linen upholstery lets the blue come forward. The rug expects to be the only patterned voice in its immediate field.
Conservation
Half turn the rug each six-month interval. Vacuum suction-only, beater bar disengaged. Blot any spill at the moment it occurs with a clean dry cotton cloth, never rub. Specialist hand-wash by a silk-trained conservator every five to seven years. With this care the rug remains a heritable object.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
