Rust-toned traditional carpets sit at a particular intersection in the Persian floral tradition, where the warm autumnal palette of late-Tabriz commercial weavings meets the open spacing of the Ziegler workshop reformation. The Jwell tradition, of which this 8' x 10' rust piece is part, takes that intersection as its starting point and resolves the chromatic warmth of the rust into a calm, inhabited field that reads as ground rather than as figure. The drawing repeats classical Persian vine and palmette motifs in soft confident outline.
The carpet was woven in India by three weavers across approximately five months. The pile is hand-spun wool worked through the asymmetric Persian knot to a cotton foundation, at a density that supports the open transitional drawing. The wool was vegetable dyed in madder, walnut, and oak gall before knotting, with the principal vine drawing in deeper rust over an ivory ground. The finished piece was washed in plant soap, sun-cured, and hand-sheared to bring the drawing into clear relief against the warm field. The whole then cured for several weeks before final inspection.
The composition
A warm rust ground laid with a quiet, all-over scrolling vine in deeper rust and soft walnut. The drawing repeats but the spacing is open, in the manner of the late-Ziegler workshops, allowing the chromatic warmth of the rust to dominate. The border is a single restrained guard band rather than a stack of competing repeats. The colour will deepen and warm further over the next decade as the wool ages and the dyes settle into the fibre. Surface variation in the hand-spun wool keeps the rust alive under interior light.
What you are buying
Antique transitional Persian carpets at this size sell at international auction in the four to twenty thousand US dollar range, and comparable contemporary work appears at Western interior dealers between three and five thousand pounds. The construction here is identical, the dye process is identical, the pile material is identical. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating, particularly as the rust deepens into the patina that distinguishes serious hand-knotted work from any decorative reproduction.
The piece in a room
A rust field at eight by ten gives a room a warm autumnal anchor. The carpet sits well under a long sofa in cream linen or oatmeal bouclé, with brass lamps and walnut tables warming the field above. Reads beautifully in a study or library where leather and oxblood paper draw the warmth out of the wool. Pairs cleanly with white plaster walls, raw oak floors, and pale-toned curtains. Reads especially well in autumn and winter light.
Conservation
Rotate the carpet a half turn each spring and autumn. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Blot any spill with a clean cotton cloth from the outside in. Hand wash by a wool-trained conservator every five to seven years. With this care the carpet runs eighty to a hundred years of useful life and outlives the first generation of owners.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
