The Heriz carpets of the Azerbaijani highlands were woven on durable cotton foundations with a robust knot count, intended for households that would put them on the floor and use them. The geometry is the recognisable thing: a stepped medallion, broad corner-spandrels, a field that reads at a distance. This carpet is a continuation of that language.

The pile is wool, chosen because it takes plant dye to the depth the cartoon needs without flattening into uniformity. The colour was drawn from a workshop palette held over decades, with each batch matched against the master cartoon before the loom was strung.

The composition

The palette: indigo blue against muddy brown. A stepped medallion centred on the field, broad corner-spandrels working in opposition, geometric border repeats holding the perimeter. The pile will compact slightly under traffic in the first season and the colour will pull together; the rug looks more itself with use, not less.

Conservation

Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn so light and traffic age the pile evenly. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged, suction only. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth, never rub. Hand-wash by a wool-trained conservator every five to seven years. With this care the rug runs eighty to a hundred years and outlives its first owners.
