Heriz weaving comes out of the village tradition of north-west Iran, where geometric medallions and angular cornerpieces replaced the curvilinear vine work of the city workshops because the village looms set their warps coarser and the design language adapted. The Heriz vocabulary is bold, angular, and architectural, and Laila is a faithful descendant of that vocabulary scaled up for a modern room. The central medallion is large, the corners spandrel out cleanly toward the border, and the field carries the geometric vine work that Heriz weavers have drawn for two centuries.
Five weavers worked the loom for eight months. The foundation is hand-spun cotton, double weft, the structure that gives Heriz carpets their characteristic firmness. Pile is hand-spun wool from village fleece, kettle-dyed in copper vats with madder root for the rust, indigo for the deep blues, and oak gall for the soft grey-greens. The Persian asymmetric knot is tied by feel against a vertical beam at a count that supports the bold geometry without breaking the line.
The composition
Rust ground across the field, a large indigo medallion with stepped corners at the centre, and ivory spandrels framing the medallion at each corner. Vine work runs across the field in a darker rust and a fine indigo, the geometry confident rather than fussy. The border is composed of three guard bands and a main turtle-palmette band in indigo and ivory. The rust ground will lighten over the first decade and the indigo will deepen, the way every honest vegetable-dyed Heriz settles into itself.
What you are buying
Antique Heriz carpets in 12' x 18' (366 x 549 cm) at auction with documented late-nineteenth-century provenance bring $35,000 to $80,000 at Skinner, Rippon Boswell, and the major Persian sales when they appear in solid condition. This is a contemporary Heriz on the same kind of double-warp foundation, hand-spun wool, vegetable dye, with the same village geometry. The rug appreciates with use as the dye matures, which the laminated-back modern alternatives do not.
The piece in a room
12' x 18' (366 x 549 cm) is the scale for a great hall or a generous dining room. The rust and indigo pull warmth into rooms with cool stone or pale plaster walls, and the geometry holds against tall ceilings the way a smaller carpet would not. The piece sits well under a long refectory table or a sectional that frames a fireplace. Direct daylight helps the dye depth.
Conservation
Half-turn the carpet each spring and autumn for even ageing. Vacuum weekly, suction only, with the beater bar disengaged. Blot any spill with a clean cotton cloth, never rub. Hand wash by a wool-trained conservator every five years. Under that care the rug serves a hundred years and outlives the first owners.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
