Vegetable dyeing as a process predates the carpet itself. Madder root for the reds, indigo leaf for the blues, walnut hull for the browns, oak gall for the deepest blacks; the colour vocabulary of the Persian and Indian knotted rug for most of its history was the contents of the dye garden. The Heritage line works in that tradition, and the rust ground in this particular weave is a madder bath matured in copper vats over two to three weeks before the wool was lowered.
Two to three weavers spent around five months on this 6' round (183 x 183 cm) piece. The pile is hand-spun wool, chosen because the slight irregularity of the hand-spun fibre takes vegetable dye to a depth mill-spun yarn cannot reach. Each knot was tied by feel against a vertical loom, with the pattern transferred row by row from a cartoon adapted to the round shape. The cotton foundation was reinforced at the field's widest point to hold tension across the curve.
The composition
A rust ground deepened by the madder dye, with secondary motif work in softer earth tones reading across the field. Vegetable-dyed wool refuses to sit flat. The rust carries the warm undertone of madder in some passages and cools toward terracotta in others, and the field reads with a quiet tonal drift the synthetic-dye equivalent could not achieve. The rug ages by deepening rather than fading, especially under direct sunlight.
What you are buying
A new weaving in vegetable-dyed hand-spun wool, hand-knotted in India on a cotton foundation. The closest international dealer comparators for any 6' round in this fibre and dye specification cross ₹2.5 lac. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating. Vegetable-dyed wool is one of the few flooring categories in the world that genuinely improves through the first decade of use rather than declining.
The piece in a room
6' round (183 x 183 cm) sits well under a small round dining table seating four, in a foyer with a centred console behind the rug, or in a reading corner with a single armchair and a side table above the field. The rust pairs with cream walls, with warm timber floors, and with leather upholstery. Avoid cool grey paint; the rust loses its warmth against a cool ground.
Conservation
Rotate a quarter turn every three months. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar off. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth and cool water, never with detergent. Vegetable dyes are sensitive to alkaline cleaners. Hand wash by a wool-trained conservator every five years.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
