The sari silk tradition began as an act of thrift. Vintage silk saris, retired after a lifetime of wear, were unravelled fibre by fibre and re-spun into yarn for weaving. The result is a pile that holds a depth of colour no fresh dye can replicate, because every strand has already been bathed, sun-dried, and softened across decades of use. Each rug in this lineage carries the chromatic memory of hundreds of garments and presents that memory as a single woven field.

This teal blue carpet was tied on a vertical loom in India by 3 weavers over five to six months. The yarn is recycled silk, hand-spun on a charkha and lashed to a cotton warp at roughly 120 knots per square inch. Across 8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm), that adds up to about 1,382,400 individual knots. The slubs and tonal jumps you see are not flaws. They are the signature of a fibre with a life before this loom.

The composition

The field works teal blue as a sustained colour rather than as a flat block. Hand-spun yarn carries small irregularities through the dye, so the surface breathes under raking light and shifts as the day moves across the room. The pattern reads at a distance and reveals fineness on approach. The eye is given somewhere to settle without being told where to land. The borders pull back rather than pushing forward, which is the move that separates a considered design from a busy one.

The piece in a room

8' x 10' (8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm)) is the working scale for an open-plan living-dining area or a generous primary bedroom. Conservation

Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn so light and traffic age the rug evenly. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged, suction only. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth, never rub. A hand wash by a wool-trained conservator every five to seven years preserves the dye depth and the pile structure. With this care the carpet runs eighty to a hundred years and outlives its first owners. A pad underneath extends the life of both the rug and the floor below it.
