Mahal weaving descends from the central Persian villages around Mahalat that produced floor pieces for the European trade in the late nineteenth century. The cartoons opened the Persian floral vocabulary into broader, more relaxed compositions designed for Western drawing rooms, and the dark purple field in this rug carries that softened formality into a contemporary register.

Three weavers shared the upright loom for nearly six months. Hand-spun wool was dyed in small lots over copper vats, the deep purple drawn from a careful combination of indigo and madder, and the floral accents drawn from weld, pomegranate, and walnut hull. Roughly 1.4 million Persian-asymmetric knots were tied by feel against a cotton warp and beaten down by hand.

The composition

A field of deep dark purple carrying floral arabesques in soft ivory, faded madder, ochre, and a quiet walnut brown. The floral repeats are loose rather than tight, the negative space generous, the border restrained. The purple is built from layered dyes rather than a single bath, which gives it tonal depth that flat-dyed grounds cannot match. Over the first decade the purple will deepen and the ivory passages will warm into bone.

Antique Mahals in fair condition with early twentieth-century attribution have sold at international auction in the same range. Suction vacuum every week with the beater bar disengaged. Rotate end to end each spring and autumn. Blot spills with a clean white cotton cloth pressed against the pile from the edge inward. Avoid bleach. A wool conservator should hand-wash the rug every five years to restore lanolin.
