Gabbeh, in the Lori tribal vocabulary, is the rug woven without a cartoon. The weaver works from memory and improvisation, pulling figures and colour from a small inherited vocabulary, and the result is always a piece that could not have been planned in advance. The drawing has a directness no urban workshop can produce. The tribal Gabbeh in front of you carries that directness in size as listed.
One weaver worked this piece across roughly three months in India. Wool was hand-spun thick in the Lori register, knotted in the Persian asymmetric knot on a cotton foundation, and washed twice after the loom came down to soften the body. The pile was left long, which is what gives Gabbeh its physical presence on a floor. The figures and field carry the small irregularities that hand work produces.
The composition
The field carries the warm earth saturation Gabbeh weavers favour, brick and rust at the deep end, oat and cream at the light end, with abrash running through it as the dye lots shift. A small set of tribal figures sits off-centre in the field, drawn at the scale of memory rather than at the scale of design. A simple plain band closes the rug. The colour deepens with use.
What you are buying
Tribal Gabbehs of honest provenance sell at specialist Western dealers at multiples of this figure when condition holds. This is contemporary weaving in the same tribal register, by hand, in hand-spun wool. The piece appreciates with use rather than depreciating, the long pile gaining character with foot wear that a finer pile cannot. An entry point to collecting hand-finished tribal work.
The piece in a room
The Gabbeh suits a pooja or mandir corner, the side of a bed, the floor under a low table, or a reading nook. The earth palette pairs with walnut, with rosewood, with raw oak, with brass and copper lamps. The long pile is meant to be walked on barefoot. White plaster walls let the colour read clearly; lime-washed walls let it warm.
Conservation
Rotate the rug end for end twice a year. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar off; the long pile snags otherwise. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth at the moment of incident. A specialist wool hand wash every five to seven years keeps the lanolin live and the pile open. The piece serves two generations of careful ownership.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
