Gabbeh, in the Lori tribal vocabulary, is the rug woven without a cartoon. The weaver works from memory and improvisation, pulling figures and colour from a small inherited vocabulary, and the result is always a piece that could not have been planned in advance. One weaver worked this piece across roughly three months in India. Wool was hand-spun thick in the Lori register, knotted in the Persian asymmetric knot on a cotton foundation, and washed twice after the loom came down to soften the body. The pile was left long, which is what gives Gabbeh its physical presence on a floor. The figures and field carry the small irregularities that hand work produces.

The composition

The field carries the warm earth saturation Gabbeh weavers favour, brick and rust at the deep end, oat and cream at the light end, with abrash running through it as the dye lots shift. A small set of tribal figures sits off-centre in the field, drawn at the scale of memory rather than at the scale of design. A simple plain band closes the rug. The colour deepens with use.

White plaster walls let the colour read clearly; lime-washed walls let it warm.

Conservation

Rotate the rug end for end twice a year. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar off; the long pile snags otherwise. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth at the moment of incident. A specialist wool hand wash every five to seven years keeps the lanolin live and the pile open. The piece serves two generations of careful ownership.
