Ivory and blue is the colour pairing that defined the most prized of the antique Persian floral carpets. Indigo holds against an undyed or lightly bleached wool ground in a way that no other colour combination quite matches, the cool blue reading deeper against the warm cream than it would against a coloured ground. The Sultanabad workshops of the nineteenth century used that pairing repeatedly, and the piece in front of you is a direct continuation of that visual language.
Two to three weavers in India spent close to five months on the loom. Hand-spun wool was knotted across a cotton warp and weft to a density that holds the floral detail without locking the drawing into rigid edges. The indigo was prepared in cold dye baths over two weeks of fermentation, the wool dipped twice to set the saturation to the depth the Sultanabad palette needs. The ivory was left close to undyed.
The composition
An ivory field holds blue floral repeats distributed across the surface. The vinework runs corner to corner with the slight irregularity that vegetable indigo always produces, no two motifs identical, the drawing softening where the dye took stronger and sharpening where it took lighter. As the carpet ages the indigo will deepen and the ivory will warm into bone, the contrast holding rather than diminishing because the two colours sit in different families on the dye spectrum.
What you are buying
Antique Sultanabad-pattern carpets in ivory and blue, in 6' x 9' with vegetable dye and condition grading, sell at Christie's and Sotheby's at twenty-five to forty-five thousand US dollars when they appear. This is a new weaving on the same draw and density, in hand-spun wool, dyed by the same vegetable processes, made in India. The Western dealer markup on equivalent new goods is three to four times the source price. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating.
The piece in a room
6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) sits under a primary bed, anchors a study with a desk and reading chair, or grounds a small living arrangement around a two-seater sofa. The ivory ground bounces light and the blue reads as a quiet anchor against any wall colour from chalk through to deep navy. Pairs with oak, walnut, brass, raw linen, and natural leather. Particularly effective in light-filled rooms where the ivory ground takes on the colour of the surrounding architecture.
Conservation
Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn so light and foot traffic distribute evenly across the field. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged, suction only. Blot spills immediately with a clean cotton cloth, never rub. A wool-trained conservator should hand-wash the rug every five to seven years. With this care, the carpet runs eighty to a hundred years and the dye work continues to develop.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
