Tribal carpet design developed in the nomadic and semi-settled communities of West and Central Asia and was adapted by Indian weavers in the twentieth century into a vocabulary of bold geometric figures, ram horns, hooked diamonds, and gul forms set against deep saturated grounds. Gold and burgundy are the canonical tribal palette, the burgundy from madder, the gold from a yellow over-dye baked over a paler ground. This rug carries that tradition forward at room scale.

Three weavers shared a single loom for around six months in India to complete the 9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) field. The pile is hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation, with the weavers reading the design from a memorised cartoon rather than from a printed graph. The result is the slight irregularity in the geometric figures that distinguishes a hand-knotted tribal piece from a copy.

The composition

A burgundy field carries a central column of gold geometric medallions, flanked by smaller gul figures and bracketed by a layered border in ivory and indigo. The colours sit at high contrast but the burgundy is not flat; it carries the abrash, the natural variation in pigment that comes from each batch of dye taking the wool slightly differently. Over a decade the gold will warm into honey and the burgundy will deepen.

What you are buying

A nine-by-twelve hand-knotted tribal wool rug in this palette, made to this density, would price at three to four times its MSRP at a London or New York dealer. The piece is a contemporary weaving in a long tradition, on the same kind of loom, in the same fibre. Hand-knotted rugs of this calibre appreciate with use rather than depreciating.

The piece in a room

9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) is the canonical drawing-room or formal dining scale. The rug expects a full ten-seat table or an L-shaped sofa above it as the room's anchor. The deep burgundy and gold sit best against ivory or pale plaster walls; the contrast carries to the architecture. Pairs with walnut and rosewood furniture, with brass lamps, with leather upholstery in tobacco.

Conservation

Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn so the field ages evenly. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar off. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth, working from the outside of the spill inward. Hand-wash by a wool conservator every five to seven years. With this care a tribal piece of this construction outlives its first two owners.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
