The dhurrie is among the oldest surviving textile forms on the subcontinent, a flat-weave tradition that ran in parallel with knotted pile production from the moment that pile arrived under Mughal patronage. The contemporary edit in neutral keeps the form moving forward.
A pair of weavers worked the dhurrie on a horizontal flatbed loom for 3 weeks, beating the weft down at every pass with a hand comb. The result is a tight, weft-faced textile that lies low against the floor. The cotton was selected for staple length and tensile strength suited to flat-weave construction, where every weft pass takes the full mechanical load of the design. Lower grades of fibre will pull and slacken over time; the grade used here holds the geometry through decades of household use without the warp showing through the design.
The composition
A field in natural, the figure work in tonal contrast. The flat-weave construction means the rug sits low against the floor rather than rising into a soft pile, which is why the form has lived for two thousand years in domestic use across the Asian belt. The piece works as much as a textile object as a floor covering. Many serious collectors hang flat-woven work of this scale and quality on the wall for parts of the year, treating it as a graphic surface rather than as utility flooring.
The piece in a room
5' × 8' (152 × 244 cm) works in a primary bedroom over a hardwood floor, in a sun room, in a guest space where the cotton flatness gives the floor a quiet ground. Reverses for use season to season; both faces of a flat-weave are working surfaces and the rug effectively gives a household two pieces in one. Care
Light vacuuming once a week, suction only, no rotating brush. Spot clean with cool water; do not introduce strong detergents that contain optical brighteners. Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
