The long-pile shag has its roots in the Greek flokati, a high-altitude weaving washed under cold mountain water until the wool bloomed open and held the body heat of a sleeping shepherd. The contemporary shag carries the same logic into a softer setting. A long pile that swallows light, holds dust below the surface, and gives a room the quiet acoustic that hard floors strip out. The form has settled into the modern interior as the antidote to bare polished concrete.
This brown carpet was hand-tufted in India by 2 tufters and 1 finisher over five weeks. Polyester pile was pushed through a stretched cotton canvas with a tufting gun, sealed at the back with natural latex, and finished with a cotton scrim. The pile was then sheared by hand to a long open length so the fibre falls rather than stands, the way a flokati does on a cold floor.
The composition
The field works brown as a sustained colour rather than as a flat block. Hand-spun yarn carries small irregularities through the dye, so the surface breathes under raking light and shifts as the day moves across the room. The pattern reads at a distance and reveals fineness on approach. The eye is given somewhere to settle without being told where to land. The borders pull back rather than pushing forward, which is the move that separates a considered design from a busy one.
The piece in a room
The brown ground works against both light and saturated walls. Pair the carpet with low upholstery, with mid-tone wood, and with art that keeps to one or two strong colours. The geometry holds at room distance and rewards inspection at close range. Specific dimensions are listed below.
Care
Use a vacuum on suction only. Blot spills, do not rub. Light shedding is normal for the first month and a half as the loose surface fibres work themselves out; the body of the pile is unaffected. A professional dry-clean every two to three years keeps the latex backing supple and the pile colour true. A pad underneath the rug protects both the latex and the floor below.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
