The floral Serapi is the more conversational sibling of the medallion Serapi. Where the medallion version centres the eye, the floral cartoon distributes the design across the entire field with vines, palmettes, and stylised blossoms running corner to corner without a single dominant focal point. This rug works in that floral register, with a deep red ground softened by passages of rust and the floral repeat scaled to read across an 8 x 10 expanse without crowding the field.

Three weavers shared the loom for close to six months of sustained work. Yarn was hand carded and hand spun, then immersed in small dye baths of madder red and walnut hull that produce the rust-shifted palette characteristic of the floral Serapi. Each Persian asymmetric knot was tied by hand against the warp and combed flat between rows. After weaving, the carpet was sheared by hand to even the pile and washed to set the dye and lift the lanolin sheen the natural fibre carries.

The composition

A deep red ground washed through with passages of softer rust where the dye took unevenly. The floral cartoon is drawn loosely, the vines breathe rather than march, and the palmettes are scaled large enough to read at room distance. The border is layered, classical, and proportioned to support the field. As the rug ages the reds will deepen at the centre and lift at the edges, the rust passages will mellow toward terracotta, and the entire field will gain the soft mature glow that only hand-spun wool produces under regular use.

Antique floral Serapis of comparable scale and condition sell at international auction in the 6 to 20 lac range. This is a new weaving in the same tradition, on the same loom geometry, in the same hand-spun wool, with a full century of usable life ahead of it. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating, and a floral Serapi reads slightly more contemporary than a medallion version, which extends its design relevance across changing interior fashions.

The piece in a room

8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) carries a primary living room or a formal dining area. The red and rust palette holds best against ivory plaster, against limewash, against oiled walnut, and against terracotta or sandstone floors. Pair with brass lighting, with leather, with raw linen, with carved wood, and with traditional or transitional furniture rather than aggressively modern pieces. The floral repeat works particularly well under round dining tables, where the lack of a central medallion is an advantage.

Conservation

Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn so the dye ages evenly across the field. Vacuum weekly on suction only, beater bar off. Blot any spill with cotton immediately, never rub. Have the rug hand washed by a wool-trained conservator every five years. Cared for this way the rug runs eighty years and remains a piece worth handing down.
