The classic floral idiom is the most-replicated design language in the carpet trade, and it survives because it is built to do one thing well. Carry an interior across decades without committing to a fashion cycle. The pattern in front of you sits inside the lineage that runs through the Persian Mahal workshops of the 1880s, the Indian floor-loom workshops of the early twentieth century, and the contemporary master weavers who hold that tradition now. A vegetable-dyed wool floral piece is the closest a new carpet comes to looking like a sixty-year-old one on day one.

Two weavers shared the loom for about three and a half months in India. Around 800,000 asymmetric knots tied against cotton warps in hand-spun New Zealand wool. The dyes were prepared from madder root, indigo, walnut hull, and oak gall, each matured in copper vats for two to three weeks before the wool was lowered. The piece was finished with a slow tea wash that drops the new-wool saturation into a measured patina, then sheared by hand to expose the irregular surface only hand-spun yarn produces.

The composition

The floral repeat moves across the field in an even rhythm, no central medallion, with a single deep border framing the composition. The palette runs through dark earth tones with bone and faint madder accents drawn through the design at measured intervals. Over the years the bone will warm and the dark grounds will lighten where afternoon light falls. The dye saturation shifts year by year and the carpet does not arrive complete.

What you are buying

Antique Persian floral carpets in 4' x 6' format with comparable construction and condition trade at western auction in the range of $8,000 to $20,000 when they appear. This is a contemporary weaving inside the same tradition, on the same kind of loom, to the same density, in the same fibre. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating. The price reflects the small format, not a compromise on construction.

The piece in a room

4' x 6' (122 x 183 cm) is the working scale for the foot of a bed, a reading nook with a single armchair, a small entry hall, or layered over a larger flat-weave in a primary living room. The classical palette pairs with walnut and oak furniture, with chalk and oat walls, and with brass or bronze lighting. The piece reads at intimate scale; the design is best seen at six to ten feet.

Conservation

Rotate twice a year so foot traffic and sunlight age the wool evenly. Vacuum weekly with suction only, beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth and cool water, never rub. Schedule a hand-wash by a wool-trained conservator every five to seven years. With this care the carpet runs three generations.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
