Tabriz workshops in northwestern Iran formalised the medallion-and-corner composition that defined Persian classical carpet weaving from the sixteenth century onward. The central medallion read as a dome reflected on the surface of a pool, and the four corner pieces completed the architectural quotation. The pattern has been continuously woven for five hundred years.
The loom carried this piece for several months. Hand-tied knots at approximately 220 per square inch on a cotton foundation. Hand-spun wool dyed in small lots from madder root, indigo, oak gall, and walnut hull, each batch matured in copper vats for two to three weeks before the wool was lowered.
The composition
Stylised flowers float across the ground in a loose all-over repeat. The black grounds the composition; the ivory works as relief above it. Madder reds carry warmth across the field while indigo guard bands hold the edges. A vegetable-dyed wool rug does not arrive complete; it arrives ready to settle.
What you are buying
Antique Heriz and Serapi pieces with comparable drawing and condition trade at international auction in the range of $15,000 to $40,000. New weaving in the same tradition, to the same density, on a cotton foundation, exists for a fraction of that number because the production economy is intact. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating.
The piece in a room
At the size as listed, the rug works as the central composition of a room arranged around it. Mid-tone walls hold the saturation. The black carries warmth into the architecture without competing with upholstery or art.
Conservation
Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn so light and traffic age the rug evenly. Vacuum weekly with suction only, beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth without rubbing. Hand-wash by a wool-trained conservator every five years. Cared for this way, the rug runs eighty to a hundred years and outlives its first owner.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
