Cecille is the in-house design name for a Sultanabad-Ziegler hybrid that an Indian master workshop has been weaving for two decades. The brief was to take the open palmette field of the older Sultanabad and tighten the border slightly, then push the dye process toward the warmer end of the spectrum so the rug reads as a richer version of the classical lineage. The result is a carpet that pairs with both panelled wood interiors and chalk-plaster modern rooms equally well.
Four weavers shared the vertical loom for close to six months. Four weavers worked the upright loom in shifts across roughly six months. Madder root, indigo, walnut hull, oak gall, and pomegranate rind were the dye plants. Each colour matured in copper vessels for two to three weeks. After clipping the rug spent four days in sun and a long mineral wash that mellowed the saturation by two stops into a register that reads as already lived with.
The composition
An open ground in warm cream carrying palmette and vine in measured intervals. The accents are madder rust pulled toward terracotta and a deep indigo that reads almost charcoal in shadow. The border is a single guard band kept narrow so the field does the work. Faint horizontal abrash bands cross the field where neighbouring dye lots sit beside one another, the fingerprint of small-batch plant-dye work that no machine finish can imitate.
What you are buying
Antique Persian palmette carpets at this scale carry estimates of thirty-five to seventy-five thousand US dollars at international auction. This rug shares the loom architecture, the fibre, the Persian knot, and the plant-dye discipline of those antiques. At one and a half lac it appreciates with use rather than depreciating, which is the property no other floor object holds at any price.
The piece in a room
9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) is the canonical drawing-room scale. The warm palette pairs with walnut casework, brass detail, oxblood leather, terracotta plaster, and a single large work above the sofa. Mid-tone walls hold the colour balance steady. South-light rooms warm the rust further. North-light rooms keep the indigo cooler.
Conservation
Rotate the rug a half turn each spring and autumn. Vacuum weekly, suction only, beater bar off. Blot spills at once with clean cotton, never rub. Hand-wash by a trained wool conservator every six years. With this care the piece crosses a century.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
