The blue field of a tribal Persian carpet is not a single decision but a series of related ones. Indigo is the only natural dye that produces a true blue across the wool spectrum, and weavers have used it for the dominant ground in tribal weaving since at least the seventeenth century. The depth of the blue depends on how many times the wool is dipped, the length of each immersion, and the temperature of the vat. The composition in this rug uses the deep, dipped blue against rust and ivory secondary motifs, the classical tribal palette.

This 8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) carpet was woven by three weavers across roughly six months. Wool was hand-spun, indigo-dipped repeatedly to reach the saturation the design requires, and tied against a cotton foundation using the Persian asymmetric knot. The pattern was held in the weavers' memory rather than drawn from a cartoon, which is why the medallions across the field are similar but not identical.

The composition

A blue ground carrying tribal medallions in rust, ivory, and softer indigo. The medallions are stepped and angular, the borders carry secondary geometric guards, and the field is filled with smaller motifs that reward close looking. Over the years the blue will shift slightly, the rust will warm, and the ivory will yellow toward cream. A hand-spun, vegetable-dyed tribal carpet is engineered to settle into its colour rather than to hold a factory finish.

What you are buying

Antique tribal Persian carpets in this scale and condition trade between $18,000 and $40,000 at international auction. The piece in front of you is a contemporary weaving in the same tradition, in the same fibre, at the same density, for ₹1,77,429 against an MSRP of ₹3,54,858. A hand-knotted wool carpet of this construction holds value indefinitely with reasonable care, and the price reflects materials and weaver-months rather than dealer markup.

The piece in a room

8' x 10' is the working scale for a sitting room with a sofa and two chairs above it, or for a dining table that seats six. The blue ground pairs cleanly with off-white plaster, with warm woods such as walnut and teak, with leather, and with brass. The carpet reads strongest in rooms that allow it to function as the principal field rather than as one of several layered textiles.

Conservation

Rotate one half turn each spring and autumn. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth and address oil and wine within the hour. A wool-trained conservator should hand-wash the carpet every six years. With this regimen the rug serves three generations.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
