Le Corbusier kept a Beni Ourain rug under his black leather LC-2 chair in his Paris apartment in the 1950s. He chose it because the loose dark lines on the ivory ground served as a visual armature for the chrome and leather geometry of the modernist furniture above it. The decision started a movement. Beni Ourain rugs became the default ground for mid-century modern interiors across Europe and North America, and the design vocabulary has held its place for seventy years because of how undemanding the geometry is. This 9' x 12' piece scales the form to drawing-room dimension.
Four weavers shared the loom for around seven months. The wool is highland fleece, hand-carded and hand-spun before knotting, which preserves the long staple length needed for a long pile to felt without matting. The ground is undyed ivory wool. The line work is undyed dark wool from naturally pigmented sheep. No synthetic dye anywhere in the rug. The pile is cut to twenty millimetres after the rug comes off the loom and sheared a second time by hand to even the surface.
The composition
An ivory ground, almost silver under cool light, with a loose lattice of brown lines drifting across the field. The lines do not meet at perfect intersections; they drift and double back, half a knot off here and a knot wider there. Some end mid-field. The asymmetry is the signature of authentic tribal weaving and the reason machine reproductions of the form fail. The palette stays in the silver-and-warm-brown range that suits any wall colour.
What you are buying
Vintage Beni Ourain rugs at this scale are extremely rare, and the few that surface at auction or through Marrakech specialists carry tags between 8,000 and 18,000 euros. This is a contemporary piece woven to the same density and pile in handspun wool from the same kind of vertical loom. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating, and the long pile felts into a dense surface that machine equivalents cannot reproduce.
The piece in a room
9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) is the canonical drawing-room scale. The rug carries a full ten-seat dining table, anchors a sectional with side chairs, or grounds a primary suite with a king bed and foot bench. The ivory palette pairs with mid-century walnut, brushed brass, warm leather, and white plaster. Direct sunlight does not damage the undyed wool, since there is no pigment to fade.
Conservation
Rotate the rug a half turn every six months. Vacuum gently with the beater bar lifted; long pile compresses if scrubbed. Blot spills with cold water and a cotton cloth, never rub. Have the rug professionally hand washed by a wool conservator every six to eight years. With this care the piece runs sixty to ninety years.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
