The Kazak group takes its name from the highland villages between the Caucasus mountains and the Caspian, where Armenian, Azeri, and Karabagh weavers produced large-scale geometric carpets through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries for tribal use rather than for the urban market. A typical Kazak carries a saturated madder red ground, oversized geometric medallions, and a contained palette of indigo, ivory, and walnut brown. The Anara line takes that village vocabulary and reads it back at a 9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) drawing-room scale, with the looser drawing of a tribal source rather than the controlled precision of a court rug.

Three weavers shared this loom for around six months. Roughly 2.6 million hand-tied knots on a cotton foundation. The wool is highland fleece, hand-spun on a drop spindle so the yarn carries the slight irregularity that gives a tribal carpet its character. The red was struck in copper vats from madder root over a long alum mordant, the indigo from natural fermented vat dye in eight slow immersions, the ivory left undyed, and the brown drawn from walnut hull. Each colour was matured for two to three weeks before the wool was taken down.

The composition

A saturated madder red field holds three large geometric medallions in indigo and ivory, with corner spandrels in a contrasting palette and a serrated guard border in walnut brown. The drawing carries the slight irregularity of a village hand, the medallions are not perfectly identical, and the field is not perfectly square. That irregularity is the difference between a workshop carpet and a tribal one, and it is what makes the Kazak carry its weight in a contemporary room rather than feeling like a reproduction. The red will mature over the first decade and the indigo will deepen.

What you are buying

Antique Caucasian Kazaks at this scale and in comparable condition sell with Western dealers and at auction between $10,000 and $25,000 when they appear, and good ones rarely come to market. This is a new weaving in the same tradition, on the same kind of loom, in hand-spun vegetable-dyed wool. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating, a property no other floor object holds. The price reflects an opening point into serious tribal carpet collecting rather than a compromise on materials.

The piece in a room

9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) is the working scale for a primary living room, a generous open-plan layout, or a dining area with an eight-to-ten seat table. The Kazak red is best off bone-white or warm grey walls. It pairs with walnut, oak, and dark stained pine floors, with leather and undyed linen, with brass and bronze hardware, and with both modern abstract painting and traditional figurative work.

Conservation

Rotate a half turn every spring and autumn so light and traffic age the wool evenly. Vacuum weekly on suction only with the beater bar disengaged. Blot any spill with a dry cotton cloth, never rub. A wool-trained conservator should hand-wash the rug every five to seven years. With this regimen, the carpet holds for ninety to a hundred and twenty years.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
