The Agra carpet tradition, born in the Mughal court workshops of the 17th century, codified the floor as a piece of architecture rather than as decorative flooring. The format favoured large-scale floral palmette and angular vine work across an open ground, with the colour conversation organised around a single dominant chromatic event. Rust as the field colour is the most architectural of the Agra palettes; it absorbs light and gives the drawing its full saturation depth.

This 6 by 9 ft (183 by 274 cm) hand-knotted piece took two weavers close to five months on a vertical loom in India. The cotton warp was strung first, then hand-spun wool was tied into it with the asymmetric Persian knot at gallery density. The pile was sheared low so the floral palmette and angular vine work hold their drawing under traffic. Total labour runs to roughly ten weaver-months. The rust ground was built across multiple madder immersions to achieve the saturation depth single-bath dyeing cannot.

The composition

A rust ground at madder saturation, deeper than terracotta and warmer than crimson. Floral palmettes and angular vine work pull through the field in soft ivory and gold accents, with the central medallion drawn in deeper rust and the corner devices echoing the central rhythm. The border carries a single guard band of deeper rust with ivory inflection. The drawing is generous in scale, in the Agra Mughal tradition rather than tighter Persian work.

What you are buying

Hand-knotted Agra-tradition rugs at this scale and density at international gallery dealers list at $4,500 to $11,000. Antique 19th-century examples at auction clear at $15,000 to $40,000 when condition permits. The Rs 1.68 lac MSRP places this new weaving at fair gallery parity. The piece is built to outlast the architecture above it and appreciates with use rather than depreciating.

The piece in a room

6 by 9 ft (183 by 274 cm) anchors a primary bedroom, a small living area with two seats and an armchair, or a four-seater dining setup. The rust ground pairs with brass, walnut, leather, plaster walls in warm putty or lime, and natural linen. Avoid pairing with cool grey walls, which fight the warm field; the rug expects supporting architecture in a similar temperature register.

Conservation

Half-turn each season for even ageing. Vacuum weekly, beater bar off. Blot spills with cotton, never rub. Conservator hand-wash every five years. With this regime the piece runs eighty years; madder rust deepens with light exposure rather than fading and the rug improves chromatically across decades.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
