Brown as a carpet register has a longer history than almost any other colour in the textile record. Walnut hull, oak gall, tea, iron-mordanted madder, and untreated dark fleece can all yield browns at slightly different depths, and a weaver building a brown ground from sorted yarn has a richer compositional vocabulary than the single saturated reading suggests. An Agra round in brown is a study in tonal layering across a circular geometry.

One to two weavers worked this 6 ft (183 cm diameter) round over roughly three and a half months. The pile is hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation, tied with the Persian asymmetric knot. Plotting a circle on a rectangular loom requires the cartoon to be re-graphed for the chord length at every row, which is the technical demand that distinguishes a true round Agra from a square design trimmed to a circle. The piece was finished with a tea wash that drops the brown into a quieter antiqued register.

The composition

A central medallion in deeper walnut sits inside a brown field that radiates outward through a layered floral repeat. The vines are plotted to follow the circumference of the rug rather than to ignore it, and the corner work resolves at every chord with a small ivory accent. The border carries a single guard band rather than the layered borders that crowd a round at this diameter. The brown will deepen across the next decade as the wool oxidises in ambient light.

What you are buying

Antique Agra rounds at comparable scale and condition appear at London auction rooms between 5,000 and 10,000 pounds when they appear, which is rarely. A new Agra round is a continuation of the same lineage at a small fraction of that pricing, and the supply of weavers trained to plot a circular cartoon contracts each year. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating.

The piece in a room

6 ft (183 cm) diameter sits naturally under a round dining table for four to six, in the centre of an octagonal entry, or as a circular focal piece in a primary bedroom or library. The brown palette pairs with walnut, oak, brass, and oxblood leather. Round geometry asks for a centred ceiling fixture above. Pair with a single major piece of art on the nearest wall.

Conservation

Rotate a quarter turn every six months so foot traffic distributes evenly across the radius. Vacuum on low suction with the beater bar off. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth pressed flat. A wool-trained conservator should hand wash the rug every five to six years.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
