Brown as a carpet register has a longer history than almost any other colour in the textile record. Walnut hull, oak gall, tea, iron-mordanted madder, and untreated dark fleece can all yield browns at slightly different depths, and a weaver building a brown ground from sorted yarn has a richer compositional vocabulary than the single saturated reading suggests. The piece was finished with a tea wash that drops the brown into a quieter antiqued register.

The composition

A central medallion in deeper walnut sits inside a brown field that radiates outward through a layered floral repeat. The vines are plotted to follow the circumference of the rug rather than to ignore it, and the corner work resolves at every chord with a small ivory accent. The border carries a single guard band rather than the layered borders that crowd a round at this diameter. The brown will deepen across the next decade as the wool oxidises in ambient light.

Antique Agra rounds at comparable scale and condition appear at London auction rooms between 5,000 and 10,000 pounds when they appear, which is rarely. A new Agra round is a continuation of the same lineage at a small fraction of that pricing, and the supply of weavers trained to plot a circular cartoon contracts each year. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating.

Conservation

Rotate a quarter turn every six months so foot traffic distributes evenly across the radius. Vacuum on low suction with the beater bar off. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth pressed flat. A wool-trained conservator should hand wash the rug every five to six years.
