The Agra carpet weaving tradition was developed in the 17th century under the Mughal court, where Persian master weavers were brought into India and asked to translate their floral and trellis vocabulary into something distinctly Indian. The result, over two hundred years, became its own school. Looser composition than the Persian originals, deeper saturation in the indigo and madder, and a scale of the floral motifs that suits Indian rooms with high ceilings and stone floors. The pattern in this carpet sits inside that lineage.
Two weavers in India shared the vertical loom for close to five months. Roughly 2.3 million hand-tied knots, every one set against a cotton warp by feel. The wool is long-staple New Zealand stock, hand-spun and dyed in lots small enough to leave subtle abrash through the field. The finishing wash was repeated three times after the carpet came off the loom, which is the step that gives Agra carpets their characteristic soft sheen.
The composition
A beige ground carries the floral and vine repeat in sage, soft rose, and ivory. The corner work and central medallion are drawn from the classical Agra repertoire, with the proportions opened slightly for a contemporary room. Sage is the colour the eye reads first, threading through the field as the connecting tissue between the warmer accents. The border is a single vine band rather than the layered borders of the Persian classical school, which is what keeps this carpet quiet rather than busy.
What you are buying
Antique Agra carpets of comparable scale and condition trade at international auction in the range of $20,000 to $50,000 when they appear. This is a new weaving in the same tradition, on the same kind of loom, in the same fibre, at a fraction of the cost. The carpet appreciates rather than depreciates with use. A hand-knotted Agra in undyed-warp wool is one of the few floor pieces that gains value over a generation.
The piece in a room
8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) is the working scale for a formal living room with a sofa and two flanking armchairs, or a dining room under a six-seater. The Agra palette pairs naturally with traditional Indian wood furniture in rosewood and teak, with stone walls, and with brass or copper accents. Lime-washed or pale terracotta walls let the rug carry the warmth of the room.
Conservation
Rotate every six months so light and footfall wear the pile evenly. Vacuum weekly with suction only, beater bar off. Address spills within thirty minutes by blotting with cold water and a clean cotton cloth. A professional wool wash every five to seven years removes ground-in dust the vacuum cannot reach. With this care the carpet outlives several rooms of furniture.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
